As the age-old saying goes, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder." If that is true, to define what is beautiful becomes difficult. It's an individual concept. What appears beautiful to one person may be ugly to another. In this world, our definitions tend to revolve around appearance, achievements, address, occupation, social status, and much more. But just like us, God has his own unique definition of beauty!
Consider when Samuel was looking for the next king of Israel. He was examining Jesse's sons and one stood out, Eliab. One can imagine that he had a striking appearance, one of a strong, bold, and courageous man. But God had a different idea. 2 Samuel 16:7 But the Lord said to Samuel, "Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things man looks at. Man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart."
Our goal in Young Life is that every high school student we encounter will begin to redefine their own beauty using God's definition. We were created in God's image, man and woman (Genesis 1:27). Thus, God constructed a unique beauty in each of us. He believes we are strong, gifted, and capable from the inside. May we help every adolescent cling to this truth in a world full of lies!
